Drag me to a Drag Queen Party!

Although Marisa Mell was during the 60's  and 70's a major Italian movie star her professional and private life was mostly found in the printed news papers and gossip magazines! Reality TV did not exist and even commercial television  at large was still in its infancy across Italy and the European mainland. So I am always very grateful to see Marisa Mell in television, news or other kind of media like home videos. And that just happened last week when a longtime Marisa Mell fan from Graz send me the present home video. He grew up with Marisa Mell in his youth in Austria, reading about her in women magazines and remembers reading about her affair with the Shah from Iran and her wild nightlife with fellow Austrian actor, friend and drugbuddy Helmut Berger. He always loved Marisa Mell's looks and never got the chance to see her movies untill later in his life because the Austrian television was not very favorable to her, almost never broadcasting her movies, not even after her untimely death or her 20 year rememberance of her death! In this home video we see a compilation of the Austrian drag queens Dame Galaxis and Miss Chantal St. Germain! At the certain moment in the home video it shows Marisa Mell and Helmut Berger at diner and drag queen spectacle at the end of the 80's or early 90's! Another famous guest is Australian Super Mega Star Dame Edna Everage! Enjoy!

These daffodils seem to turn their heads when they saw this lovely in London the other day! She is actress Marisa Mell whose latest film "Masquerade" opens at the Leicester Square Theatre on Thursday April 15th 1965. Photo was taken on April 14th 1965 and used in the newspapers "Daily Sun" on May 3rd 1965 and "Sun" on May 4th 1965. These newspapers changed the entry as follows: "Lovely Marisa Mell thinks the best place to spend an afternoon is among the daffodils. Marisa, a London actress, was waiting for the première of her latest movie "Masquerade" which opened recently at the Leicester Square Theatre, where the picture was taken."

Marisa - The Girl Who Beat The Taxi Strike!

London was without taxis on Tuesday June 14th 1966. The only person who had no trouble getting one was film actress  Marisa Mell - and she wasn't going anywhere. While almost all the city's 7600 taxis were off the streets in protest at minicab competition 25 year old Marisa had a taxi of her own all day. The cab and driver Julian Gold had been hired for the work in Hampstead on an Italian film. And as she stepped in and out of Mr. Gold's cab, leaders of London's 11.000 taximen were reporting "100 per cent, support" in their one day stoppage. But to the motorists, taxiless London was like a dream. But for the minicab men  it was not such a dream....one said: "This is all-out war. The taxi drivers are out in their private cars,  and when we call at a railway station they block us in so that we can't get out." Police were on guard outside London's Hilton hotel as about 50 taxi drivers jeered and threw coins at a minicab parked outside. The minicab driver said: "I have been send here to pick up a passenger. I am obviously scared."
//
The photo was published in the Daily Sun in England on June 21 1966 with different caption then written by the news agency issuing this picture: "The weather is at its brightest in London now, so what better time for 25 year old Austrian actress Marisa Mell to wear her cut-out dress. To be right up to date she teamed the dress with Op-art earrings and Mad stockings."
//
Trivia: Marisa Mell was in 1966 not 25 but 27 years old.
//
Trivia: The movie Marisa Mell was working on at the time was the Italian/English coproduction "Che Notte Ragazzi" from 1966 which had its première in Italy on September 30th 1966 co-starring Philippe Leroy!

During the production of her French movie "Objectif: 500 Millions" during the winter of 1965-1966, Marisa Mell stayed in Paris (France), the fashion capital of the world. So it is no wonder that one afternoon she hit the town to do nothing else than shop...shop...shop... untill she dropped accompanied by film stills photographer Emilio Lari! As you can see by these pictures Marisa Mell is clearly in her element, happy, radiant and absolutely beautiful enjoying every bit of the day! So to start off the shopping day we hit the hairdresser's for a new hair style!

Although Marisa Mell is prominently on the cover of the DVD she has only a minor role in this police movie but as always she is absolutely stunning! The DVD is issued by Raro Video US and available at all major DVD outlets!

"French Dressing at 50" Movie Exhibition in Herne Bay, England

One of my top 3 Marisa Mell movies is the 1964 comedy caper movie "French Dressing" directed by Ken Russell, notorious almost a decade later for his 1971 shocker "The Devils",  with leading men James Booth and Roy Kinnear. The movie had its world première on April 10th 1964. The movie was for the most part shot in Herne Bay, England and shows us a surprisingly comedic side of female star Marisa Mell, that will never be repeated again in her later career and thus making this movie a really stand alone among all her other movies and television work. To commemorate the 50th year since the first showing of this movie, curator Nicholas Sinclair has put together a special exhibition celebrating the life and work of British filmmaker Ken Russell and his first movie "French Dressing". Special attention is given during this exhibition to the history of the making of this movie in Herne Bay and its locals who often participated in the movie as extras. What makes this exihition also very special for Marisa Mell fans is the fact that the curator also had a special eye for the contribution of Marisa Mell in this movie and its success, slowly building into a cult following in the years since. The visitors will see a lot of ultra rare and never before seen material regarding the production of this movie and the contribution of Marisa Mell, belonging to numerous owners, some even related to the production of it. Hence Marisa Mell features heavily througout the displays in stills, behind the scene photos, original and reproduction marketing artwork and even in a recent discovered colour cinefilm in the vault of a cine maker made during the production of French Dressing.

Marisa Mell to star in new film – almost 23 years after her death!

“His Mother’s House” - « La Maison de sa Mère », the new film project by German writer-director André Schneider (who also authored “Die Feuerblume”), will be both, a homage and a vehicle for Marisa Mell. The late actress, who died in 1992, will “play” a key role in this drama about a man’s search for his roots.

“His Mother’s House” follows the journey of Anam Wagner, a man in his thirties. Professionally successful and single, he leads a rather carefree life. He and his younger brother have a very close relationship, and once in a while he visits his embittered father. One day, he receives a phone call informing him that his mother had died. Even though he had hardly seen her in years and thought he had no connection with her whatsoever, Anam feels oddly shaken and drives up to the sea where his mother had owned a beach house. And while he still thinks that he didn’t know his mother at all, he finds traces of her – and his own childhood – everywhere in that old house…

Needless to say who the estranged mother is! “His Mother’s House” is all about a woman who had left her husband and her two sons to pursue a B-movie career and paid a huge prize for her success. Marisa Mell’s photos by Angelo Frontoni will be seen throughout the film as well as scenes from “Senza via d’Uscità”, “Nel Buio del Terrore”, “Pena de Muerte”, “La Encadenada”, and “Una Sull’Altra”. Original scores by Carlo Savina and Riz Ortolani will also be part of this movie.

Pre-production has already begun. As soon as the funding has been successful, cameras will start rolling – hopefully in early 2015, around Marisa Mell’s birthday.

You can be part of this production, since Vivàsvan Pictures is still looking for sponsors and donors. About 8.000 euros are still needed to proceed with the production.

Glasses on Kant

During the production of the Mario Bava directed movie "Danger: Diabolik!" in 1967, Marisa Mell had some free time between takes which she used well given the amount of behind the scene pictures of her as Lady Eva Kant and co-star John Phillip Law as Diabolik. Set photographer was then already very famous photographer Emilio Lari who in later years would become even more famous as set photographer on movies like The Godfather trilogy or Raging Bull or Once Upon a Time in America. In this set of pictures Marisa Mell shows the latest fashion in sun glasses in her outfit from a scene of the movie where she is in disguise as a prostitute!

Virna Lisi: death of a golden haired beauty!

Almost at the end of the year 2014, on December 18th, the Italian, world  and genre cinema has to say goodbye to one of its most prominent members the talented and beautiful actress Virna Lisi, born as Virna Lisa Pieralisi, on November 8th 1936, hence 78 years old, which in my humble opinion is much to young to die. She was often regarded as the Italian Marilyn Monroe. She started her career in 1953 and worked untill her untimely death in cinema and television, winning several national and international movie awards like at the Cannes Film Festival. Virna Lisi worked with all the great directors and actors/actresses of her time during more than 114 movie and television credits.

Fans of Marisa Mell will always remember Virna Lisi in the movie "Casanova 70" with Marcello Mastroianni and "Le Dolce Signore" with Ursulla Andress and Claudine Auger.

It was only last month that the golden haired actress heared from her doctors that she had an uncurable disease and would not have long to live. Virna Lisi died peacefully today surrounded by her family and friends in Rome, Italy.

The Roman Ivy

Rome, Italy, was once in the 50's and 60's together with Paris and London THE hotspot for the movers and shakers in this world. The advantage of Rome above the other cities was her sunny and warm climate almost all year round so people had a very busy day and night life. And Marisa Mell, being an admirer of the sun, enjoyed each and every minute of it while she lived in that town for more than 20 years.

And just like her American counterpart the restaurant "The Ivy" in Los Angeles where nowadays you can see actors, agents, and all kinds of movie people eat during their luchtime, Rome had also her "ivy" to cater to people working in the movie business, most of all at Cinecitta! And what better way to be seen with your rich lover, in this case Pier Luigi Torri, than dining on a terrace in front of the restaurant.

If you would like to know more about the passionate love story between Marisa Mell and her playboy then you need to read the Marisa Mell book by André Schneider called "Die Feuerblume", available at Amazon in the US, UK and Germany.

Masquerade: rare behind the scene footage!

Although Marisa Mell was quite a star during the height of her career it is not so often that you can see footage of her with behind the scene material during the production of one of her movies! Luckily there is some material available at the moment and probably at lot more hidden in the vaults of production companies and television stations around the world certainly never to be seen ever again! In this clip you see Marisa Mell during the production of her latest movie "Masquerade" in Britain and Spain together with among others her costar Cliff Robertson. What is interesting is the end of the clip when Marisa Mell talks of her beauty and being a movie sex kitten defending herself that she is first and foremost a trained theater actress! Ironically her beauty and being a sex kitten for so long ruined her career in the end and drove her to poverty after a very expensive jet set lifestyle!

The year is 1960 when these three gorgeous ladies Marisa Mell, Senta Berger and Maria Perschy got together in front of the camera of photographer Peter Brüchmann during their stay at the theatre school Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, Austria before conquering the movie world by storm. Sadly only Senta Berger is still with us and going strong in the entertainment business in Germany.

"Marisa Mell" by Argentinean graphic artist Patricio Carbajal

Since the creation of the Marisa Mell Blog in honor of her life and work almost 7 years ago I have met a lot of interesting people from all walks of life who are fans of Marisa Mell and her movies! They all have a special story to tell about her so I am always very curious and eager to hear these stories. A few weeks ago I was contacted by mail by an Argentinean graphic artist Patricio Carbajal who had send me some art of Marisa Mell. The drawings were based on stills of her movies like the one you seen at the top of this entry. What struck me immediately was the intense power of the drawing, not just a common representation of the original picture of Marisa Mell, but her intense look for which she was very well known oozed from her eyes and face. I had never seen anything like it in the past when artists depicted her in an artistic way. I admit it I fell in love with this picture immediately and was blown away by the sheer intensity of this drawing. Whaw! Patricio Carbajal captured in my opinion the essence of what makes Marisa Mell such an interesting women and actress. It is not many artists given to do that! Eyes and face that talked to you! So I asked the artist to see more of his work which fascinated me as a genre and cult lover immensely. After seeing some other beautiful pieces of his work, you can imagine that I wanted to know more about this artist who was capable to make such stunning art. In the next interview Patricio Carbajal tells us more about his life and work! Enjoy!

Marisa Mell Blog (MMB): Hello Patricio, thank you for granting this interview on the Marisa Mell Blog.

Patricio Carbajal (PC): Thank you for asking me.

MMB: Can you tell us a little about yourself.

PC: I am 38 years old, but usually I say that I am 48, that way people can say "Wow, you look so much younger!" LOL I live in South America, in Argentina, in the City of Neuquen, near the Andes mountains!

MMB: Your drawings are amazingly beautiful and very appealing! How did you become a graphic artist? Were you already as a child interested in drawing and genre related subjects like movies, books, comics, cult figures...?

PC: Yes, it all started as a kid and as so many kids growing up, we all doodled along for fun, just that after a certain while I took it more seriously than other kids of my neighborhood, just like every other person who becomes an artist later in life, I guess. It is something that you need to do. I never gave up on my dreams and talents so I read a lot of comics, watched a lot of cartoons, copied them and created in the end my own artistic style, stories and characters.

MMB: What artistic graphic art eduction did you follow?

PC: Not that much honestly. I'm mostly self thaught. I did attend some classes with a few professional comic book artists to learn the tools of the trade, as it were, but nothing serious like art school or college or any sort of formal artistic eduction.

MMB: Seeing all your different amazing creations I can hardly believe that!

PC: I wish I did though, but I am a terrible student, I would probably miserably fail as an art student!

MMB: Since when do you work as a professional artist?

PC: Well, I started fairly young, at age 17, doing political cartoons and portraits for a local newspaper, but after a couple of years that dried up and I couldn't get any other gigs, so I got a job in an office. After 10 years I took a trip to the USA to show my work around and that is when the offers started to come my way! That was in 2007.

MMB: Can you tell us what professional work you have since then done?

PC: I have done a lot of work like comic books, storyboards, family portraits, book covers, you name it, I have done it! One of the first things I did for the American market were covers for political biographies. The first one was of US senator Sarah Palin, then president Barack Obama and other political biographies. After I started working in comics, I did my first graphic novel based on Allan Quatermain, then a horror comic book called "Vincent Price Presents", starring Hollywood screen legend Vicent Price. There are lot of great artists out there with not enough publishers so I am thankful of any opportunity I got to enter the business when an editor liked my portfolio enough to make me an offer. It was hard work, continously practicing, getting better every day untill I felt I was ready to show my work.

PC:  I have also done a number of books about films for Hasslein Books, a couple of books about the Planet of the Apes, two more for Back to the Future, Red Dwarf and this year an encyclopedia about James Bond. I also create exclusive t-shirt designs for Rotten Cotton. At the moment I am working on a new horror series called "Bottomfeeder". I am very excited about this book!

MMB: What drawing techniques do you normally use?

PC: Traditional techniques like watercolors, acrylics, pencils, pastels, nothing digital, not that I am against digital art. I just get bored quickly when working on a computer, looking at the screen all the time, so scanning my art is enough computer work for me! LOL

MMB: What is your favorite graphic art technique?

PC: My favorite technique is the good old black graphite pencil. It is the first step in creating an illustration. I always sketch the art in black pencil and then I paint it over with colors, but that original black graphite art is my favorite. Of course, I do hundreds of illustrations just in graphite and leave them like that, sometimes because I don't have the time to paint them in color.

MMB: How long does it take to make an art piece?

PC: Well, that depends on the wishes of the client. Sometimes they need an illustration in one week, so I try to adjuct to what the client asks but in general I work about 8 to 10 hours a day on an art piece! For example the Marisa Mell art created exclusively for this interview took me 5 hours to make.

MMB: Thank you so much for doing that! I appreciate it very much! It is so wonderful to see this beautiful artistic rendition of Marisa Mell.

MMB: Some of your work like the above Swamp Thing from DC Comics or the ill-fated movie are very detailed making them stunning art pieces where you can discover new things again and again when you look at it! Which by the way is one of my favorite pieces!

PC: Thanks, yes, I like to capture what I see, what I imagine, and what I like. To put that on canvas, or paper, takes a lot of work. Portrait work is though, you have to draw a lot. Some people say about my art "that it looks like a photograph" but frankly I don't like that, that they say that. I know what they want to say is that "It's alive" and that I is what I really appreciate.

MMB: What is that you like in the subjects that you draw?

PC: Wenn I find something that excites me, inspires me, amuses me or intrigues me, I just have to draw and paint it. What inspires me? I love all kind of movies, I love to draw actors and actresses like Marisa Mell.

MMB: Next to humans, do you also draw other subjects like animals, plants, objects...?

PC: Yes, I also love big wild cats.

PC: At the moment I am designing lingerie and swimwear. One of my dreams is having a clothing line for women. I'm working on this project now with my dear friend, my model and muse, actress Irene Huber. We are hoping that this dream comes true. It is a business that I have no knowledge about at the moment but we do have a lot of ideas.

MMB: How did you got to know Marisa Mell as actress?

PC: I love Marisa Mell, she is so cat-like. I first saw her in "Danger: Diabolik!". It is one of my favorite movies. Marisa Mell as Lady Eva Kant is just mesmerizing, I think she really steels the show. You can't take your eyes off her. And of course, the moment I saw her I just had to draw her. She is so mysterious and feline. I can't get enough of Marisa Mell! LOL

MMB: Can't we all! LOL

MMB: Have you seen a lot of movies of her? Which movies do you like best of her?

PC: In my collection I have "Danger: Diabolik!"and "Una Sull'Altra", as fan of directors Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci. I also have "Gangsters in London" with Christopher Lee and Klaus Kinski and "New York Chiama Superdrago" with Margret Lee. My favorite are Diabolik and Gangsters in London. Why? Diabolik, not only because Marisa Mell is amazing in her rol as Eva Kant but also because the movie itself is a real masterpiece. John Phillip Law is a perfect Diabolik, one of the best comic book movies. Gangsters in London is a movie with one of my favorite actors in it, Christopher  Lee and of course I love Marisa Mell as a good girl. BTW I love to hear speak German. I am a fan the German Edgar Wallace movies. I wish she had done a Dr. Mabuse movie. A series of movies that I also like a lot. Did you know that she once was considered for the role of Tatiana in the second James  Bond movie "From Russia With Love", the role went in the end to Daniela Bianchi. Marisa Mell would have been a great Bond girl!

MMB: What is your fascination with cult and genre figures like James Bond, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Lucille Ball...

PC: I have been a lifelong fan of James Bond since I was 6. I love all the Bond actors, some fans say that Sean Connery was the best Bond, others say Roger Moore, I don't have a favorite. I like them all. Naturally I feel inspired by the whole 007 world, not just Bond as a character, but everything that make the movies so appealing like the women, the cars, the gadgets and of course the villains. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price are some of my favorite actors. I like the elegance and menance of the characters that they portray and of course their kind of dark humor. I have always been intrigued by the "dark side", the macabre and the bizarre. These actors were the ones that created a perfect mix of these elements with elegance and panache. They had their own brand of terror which I try to capture in my art that is based on them.

MMB: How can readers contact you when they are interested in art pieces to buy or as a commission?

PC: Of course I am on Facebook (Patricio Carbajal) and I have my own art blog called "Patart"
I do a lot of commissions and love getting in contact with your readers and fellow Marisa Mell fans. I am very grateful to fans and collectors all over the world enabling me to do my art. After all those years I still can't believe there are people out there who want to collect my art.

MMB: Patricio, thank you so much for this interview and the beautiful art you made!

PC: My pleasure!
